オーストラリア原産の多雨林植物の価値が注目されている中で、レモンマートルは新鮮な芳香で、またその香りには薬効や殺菌の特性が認められ珍しいと注目されています。
そのレモンマートルの木の存在が知られたのは1853年まで逆のぼり、その頃、イギリスの植物学者ジェームス・バックハウスにちなんで、バクホウシアシトリオドラと学名が定められました。
葉から抽出されたオイルに含まれるシトラールの含有量（９０％～９７％）が高いことは100年前に確認されていましたが、現在になりそれが商業として成り立つ可能性があることを悟りました。
葉から抽出されたエッセンシャルオイルは強い抗菌力で、抗真菌性の、そして、抗ウィルス性の特性を持っています。
リディール・ウォーカーのテストはシトラール等の多くのエッセンシャルオイル成分のフェノール係数を調べる事によって、植物の殺菌薬活動を評価します。供試生物としてバクテリアサルモネラ菌の種類を使用。
テスト（より高い点数を出せる方が良いとされる）では、レモンマートルのオイルが１６点の格付けであり、ティーツリーが１１点、ユーカリシトリオドラが８点です。
